The Green Lung at Crawter’s Brook Peoples Park

The Green Lung sculpture is a striking synthesis of nature and human biology. It takes the shape of a human lung and this is fused with tree root, branch and trunk forms and the veins and arteries of a lung are replaced with roots or branches.
It is one of three sculptures the sculptor Andrew McKeown was commissioned to deliver as part of the Lost Woodland Gallery.
Situated at the northern end of the flood alleviation basin at Crawter’s Brook People’s Park in the middle of the decked seating area.
Zone 4 (Green Zone)
For Crawter’s Brook People’s Park, McKeown developed a series of ideas under the theme of the “Lost Woodland Gallery.” His concept imagines sculptural fragments that appear to have been “claimed by nature, partially rediscovered, fossilised, preserved in time,” reflecting both the woodland setting and Manor Royal’s long history of experimentation and innovation. The Green Lung has a few different meanings. Crawter’s Brook itself situated in the middle of the busy business district, acts as a “green lung” for the area offering respite and opportunities for quiet rest, while the transparent lung sculpture also references the medical companies of Manor Royal.
